Pro-censorship elites melt down over equal treatment on Twitter

Pro-censorship elites are distraught over Elon Musk’s stewardship of Twitter, which now subjects them to the same policies as other users.

Musk has made few changes to Twitter, though he did announce that account verification, which earns a blue checkmark next to the account username and has been a status symbol for A-listers, will now be available to everyone for $8 per month.

“Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bullshit,” tweeted Musk. “Power to the people! Blue for $8/month.”

The announcement received strong pushback, particularly from members of the upper class.

Musk also drew ire Sunday when he permanently suspended the account of comedian Kathy Griffin – known for her gory photoshoot in which she held Trump’s bloody head – for impersonating him. Griffin had changed her name to “Elon Musk” and changed her profile picture to one of Musk.

Despite the fact that impersonating others has always been a violation of Twitter’s policies, even before Musk, elites were furious. Griffin even logged into her dead mother’s account later in the day to defend herself.

On Monday’s broadcast of The View, host Whoopi Goldberg seethed at Musk and promised to leave the platform in protest.

“It has been a little over a week since Elon Musk took over Twitter, and the place is a — it’s a mess,” Goldberg began.

“He’s putting his $8 charge for blue-check verification on hold. First it was going to be $20, now it’s going to be $8. He also suspended Kathy Griffin for impersonating him on a parody account,” Goldberg said.

“I’m getting off, I’m getting off today,” Goldberg continued, complaining that “certain kinds of attitudes” that had been blocked in the past were back on the platform. Goldberg also tried to claim that free speech means censorship, saying that “some speech is not okay free speech.”

“They keep saying that it’s free speech,” Goldberg added. “And some speech is not — all — all speech is not free speech! Some speech is not okay free speech! So everybody has to agree on that, but if people keep saying, ‘Well, you’re hurting my free speech,’ it’s going to be a problem. But you know what? This is going to be — this is our problem. But it ain’t my problem today, because I’m out.”

Host Sunny Hostin also expressed support for repealing Section 230 now that Elon Musk is at Twitter’s helm. Section 230 is a law which immunizes social media platforms from liability resulting from content on their sites and is fiercely protected by the Biden administration.

But during the broadcast, Hostin insisted that it is the Democrats who advocate for repealing Section 230.

“[Section 230] allows, you know, protection of social media as platforms. Well they just say that they’re third-party platforms, they’re not the ones putting it out there. That can only change by legislation, and if the Republicans rule the Senate, that will never change,” said Hostin.

President Trump and his supporters have frequently called to undo Section 230, with Trump even trying to include it in a spending bill in 2020.
