What happened to Pfizergate?Perhaps the question should be rephrased: Does anyone remember Pfizergate?Back in November, America's Frontline Doctors (<a href="https://aflds.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AFLDS</a>) Frontline News was among a large number of fact-based media outlets <a href="https://aflds.org/news/post/pfizer-research-center-whistleblower-calls-data-reliability-into-question/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reporting</a> on a potentially devastating exposé first published in <a href="https://www.bmj.com/content/375/bmj.n2635" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The British Medical Journal </a>(The BMJ), based on data supplied by a whistleblower from a research center used by Pfizer to test its mRNA shots, then still in the trial stage. Brook Jackson, a former employee at Ventavia, the research center in question, provided The BMJ with “dozens of internal company documents, photos, audio recordings, and emails,” <a href="https://www.bmj.com/company/newsroom/facebook-urged-to-act-over-incompetent-fact-check-of-bmj-investigation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">in the words of The BMJ’s editors</a>. “These materials revealed a host of poor clinical trial research practices occurring at Ventavia that could impact data integrity and patient safety.”Unsurprisingly, given both the content of the exposé and the prestige of the journal in which it was published, the article achieved the second highest “Altmetric” score of all time across all biomedical publications. It was also widely shared in the general media – and even achieved a mention in MSM!Unfortunately, that was a sign that things had somehow gone awry.The only mainstream media outlet that seems to have picked up this story is <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-12-10/coronacheck-pfizer-tromethamine-not-illegal/100686476" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ABC Fact Check</a>. In case readers don’t yet know, coming to the attention of a media fact check is widely considered to be bad news – that is, if you want to have broad credibility and not be dismissed as an anti-vax nut-job.&nbsp;ABC Fact Check, in point of fact, did not actually conduct its own review of the evidence. Instead, it relied on another “fact check” performed by Lead Stories, which works for Facebook. ABC also quoted a spokesperson for the Therapeutic Goods Administration (whatever that is) who diminished the significance of the findings detailed by The BMJ and added that, “The safety and efficacy [of Pfizer’s shots] demonstrated in clinical trials has been thoroughly substantiated in real world use.”And that was the end of it, more or less. Two months later, who remembers the story? Even the FDA, which absolutely should have investigated, did not, despite being approached by Jackson with her data. All that achieved was getting her fired.On the other hand, it wasn’t quite the end of the story, precisely because of the reaction the article engendered. One might have expected that an article that was definitively ignored by every single mainstream newspaper and online media outlet would be allowed to die a quiet death without being viewed as a threat to anyone. Apparently, though, someone at Lead Stories and/or Facebook decided that the content was potentially threatening and that The BMJ deserved to have the fact checkers unleashed on it.“Did the British Medical Association’s news blog reveal flaws that disqualify the results of a contractor’s field testing of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, and were the problems ignored by the Food &amp; Drug Administration and by Pfizer?” the <a href="https://leadstories.com/hoax-alert/2021/11/fact-check-british-medical-journal-did-not-reveal-disqualifying-and-ignored-reports-of-flaws-in-pfizer-vaccine-trial.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lead Stories</a> “fact check” commences, before answering its own question: “No, that’s not true.”In a sane universe, the idea of someone entirely lacking medical credentials presuming to fact-check one of the most reputable medical journals in the world would be entirely ludicrous. It is ludicrous, but unfortunately, it is happening, and is actually welcomed by many. Shockingly, Dean Miller, managing editor of Lead Stories (and a journalist with no stated experience in the medical or research field), referred to The BMJ as a “news blog.”&nbsp;Miller may be a journalist, but he is certainly no investigative reporter of any stature, given that he accepts the assurances of both Pfizer and the FDA – both interested parties – without seeking outside verification or, apparently, any evidence backing up their allegations. According to Miller and Lead Stories, The BMJ is wrong because Pfizer and the FDA say so. But what did the FDA actually say? According to Miller, all the FDA actually stated was that “the benefits of the Pfizer shot outweigh rare side effects and the clinical trial data are solid.” Other than that, the FDA refuses to comment as the issue is “ongoing". Perhaps it is still ongoing now, several months later, which is the reason why nothing more has been heard from the FDA on the issue.As for Pfizer, Miller writes that they have “reviewed the claims and found them to be unproven” after conducting a "thorough investigation into the issues raised.” Interestingly, although they found the claims unproven, Pfizer still took actions “to correct and remediate where necessary.” (No contradiction there…) In any case, Miller was apparently satisfied to hear from Pfizer’s senior manager for science media relations that, “Pfizer’s investigation did not identify any issues or concerns that would invalidate the data or jeopardize the integrity of the study.” Ventavia echoed Pfizer’s sentiments.Summing up their view of the significance of The BMJ’s trove of whistleblower data, Lead Stories called it a mere “contretemps” and cited “medical experts” who have ruled that the Pfizer trial data remain reliable.Lead Stories then turned its attention to the whistleblower herself. Jackson was particular to stress that she is “fully vaccinated and not an anti-vaccine activist.” Nonetheless, Miller notes that, “On Twitter, Jackson does not express unreserved support for COVID vaccines,” having written that “vaccination makes sense if a person is in a high-risk category.”&nbsp;Worst of all, however, was a comment Jackson made in a Twitter post critical of the use of Sesame Street to encourage children to be injected with a COVID shot. “Shocking, actually,” was what she wrote.According to Miller, this information on Jackson’s personal opinions provides the necessary “context” for reading and interpreting the article published in The BMJ, without which a person could be misled.The BMJ did not take kindly to being fact-checked by a mediocre journalist; its editors penned an <a href="https://www.bmj.com/content/375/bmj.n2635/rr-80" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">open letter </a>to Mark Zuckerberg, Miller’s employer (even though Miller went out of his way to stress that Facebook does not decide which articles linked on Facebook it checks).“Dear Mark Zuckerberg,” wrote Fiona Godlee and Kamran Abbasi, The BMJ’s outgoing and incoming editors. “We are writing to raise serious concerns about the ‘fact checking’ being undertaken by third party providers on behalf of Facebook/Meta.”Godlee and Abbasi then described the gravity of the allegations in the article concerned and stressed that it underwent external peer review as well as legal review. However, “readers began reporting a variety of problems when trying to share our article,” they wrote. “Some reported being unable to share it. Many others reported having their posts flagged with a warning about ‘Missing context… Independent fact-checkers say this information could mislead people.’”&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="/uploads/bmj_facebook_4288cc10e0.png"></figure>Perhaps even more disturbingly, “Those trying to post the article were informed by Facebook that people who repeatedly share ‘false information’ might have their posts moved lower in Facebook’s News Feed,” a form of quasi-censorship.The BMJ editors stressed that Lead Stories “fails to provide any assertions of fact that The BMJ article got wrong,” and that even though they contacted Lead Stories, “they refuse to change anything about their article or actions that have led to Facebook flagging our article.”The editors added that Cochrane, an international provider of quality medical reviews, has also been targeted by Meta (via Instagram) and accused of violating Community Guidelines, and expressed their concern that, “Rather than investing … to help ensure the accuracy of medical information shared through social media, you have apparently delegated responsibility to people incompetent in carrying out this crucial task.”Godlee and Abbasi concluded their letter with the hope that Facebook would “act swiftly … to correct the error … and to review the processes that led to the error; and generally to reconsider your … approach to fact checking overall.”There’s no evidence that Facebook did reconsider anything as a result of this letter from the editors of The BMJ. However, Lead Stories was quick to react, defending its criticisms of the BMJ in <a href="https://leadstories.com/analysis/2021/12/lead-stories-response-to-a-bmjcom-open-letter-objecting-to-a-lead-stories-fact-check.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">two</a> separate <a href="https://leadstories.com/analysis/2022/01/context-matters-why-lead-stories-fact-checked-the-bmj.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">articles</a>.According to Miller, The BMJ was misleading in not stressing in the article’s title that the findings uncovered related only to three out of 153 research sites.&nbsp;Miller also implicitly defended the FDA’s failure to investigate Jackson’s reports, quoting one Dr. Gorski who excuses the FDA as it is “underfunded and [therefore] doesn’t audit sites as often as it should…” That excuse, of course, does not explain why a site that was flagged by an insider as problematic still did not merit an audit, even when Jackson directly approached the FDA with her concerns.As for Pfizer, Miller described how the pharma company was “disappointed by the recent article published by the British Medical Journal that failed to contact us prior to publication and selectively reported certain claims with the goal of undermining confidence in a vaccine that has been given to hundreds of millions of people worldwide.” Miller then lauded Lead Stories for its own outreach to Pfizer and publication of the company’s response (although it is unclear how that constitutes a fact check…)Miller then returned to his previous attacks on the integrity of the whistleblower, insisting that it is vital for readers to be given the “context” of her actions, given that her Twitter account “agreed with leading COVID misinformation-spreader Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s criticism of the ‘Sesame Street’ episode in which Big Bird encourages kids to get a COVID-19 vaccine.”Furthermore, Lead Stories made an attempt to discredit the author of the original BMJ article, Paul D. Thacker, quoting again Dr. Gorski who accused Thacker of “trying to turn a molehill into the proverbial mountain, as long as it fulfills his purpose of demonizing Big Pharma.”What Miller repeatedly stressed, however, was that the fact that The BMJ’s article was shared by people “in the Disinformation Dozen” and by other “anti-vaxxers” somehow constituted evidence that The BMJ had erred.“We might not be doctors,” Miller wrote of his team, “but we do know a thing or two about journalism. When your headline or article causes a large number of readers to conclude things you didn’t write, you are doing something wrong. Which is why we decided that a fact check was warranted and appropriate here.”“Think of all the bad takes about VAERS data,” Miller added, in a statement that reveals much of how he perceives “facts” and “fact-checking.”&nbsp;Thacker’s article continues to enjoy a wide readership comprising people who look to The BMJ rather than to Facebook to enable them to make informed decisions regarding their health and their very lives.&nbsp;

Who's afraid of Big Bad Tech? 

A British vigilante group known as the “Blade Runners” is receiving widespread support from British taxpayers as it continues to destroy climate surveillance cameras across London.<h2>The ULEZ mandate</h2>By order of London Mayor Sadiq Khan, the city is peppered with ultra-low emission zones (ULEZs), areas accessible only to low-emission vehicles. Cars that do not meet the city’s environmental standards are charged £12.50 ($16) for entering the ULEZ. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras positioned around the zones read license plates and check them against the vehicles’ make and model in real time. If a vehicle does not meet the environmental threshold, a fine is levied against the car owner.&nbsp;The ULEZ climate mandate has drawn heavy&nbsp;<a href="https://frontline.news/post/london-hundreds-protest-against-climate-mandates">protests</a> from residents, including&nbsp;<a href="https://frontline.news/post/british-veteran-launches-hunger-strike-as-unrest-grows-over-climate-mandates">hunger strikes</a> and refusals to pay fines. Taxpayers have also taken to disabling the ANPR surveillance cameras which Transport for London (TfL), the city’s transportation department, said will be used both for climate and law enforcement.<h2>Taxpayers cheer the ‘Blade Runners’</h2>Since the climate restrictions were expanded last year, the Blade Runners have taken to disabling and destroying hundreds of cameras. Some surveillance vans have been spotted covered in graffiti with their tires slashed, while others have been completely covered in tarp.Last month, 21 cameras were destroyed in the hours after Sadiq Khan was re-elected mayor of London, the&nbsp;Daily Mail&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13538797/Moment-Blade-Runner-uses-power-tool-cut-ULEZ-camera-traffic-light-latest-attack-Sadiq-Khans-hated-scheme.html">reported</a>. Last weekend, Blade Runners used power tools to topple a ULEZ camera and traffic lights to the delight of some fellow taxpayers. In a video that was posted to social media, passing cars can be heard honking in support.The video received over 37,000 likes. Comments on the post were largely supportive, with users writing that, “When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty,” and “Fair play to them, it's a complete scam that does nothing.”Blade Runner Matt Hardy told the&nbsp;Daily Mail&nbsp;that the Blade Runners are “people pissed off about the tyranny reigning over us and getting out and doing things about it – real votes, real boys here.”<h2>‘These cameras are not about the climate. They are about control’</h2>British actor and influencer Laurence Fox said this week he was just given back his electronic devices by police after being arrested earlier this year for cheering on the Blade Runners:<blockquote>These cameras are not about the climate. They are about control. They are the primary infrastructure for all sorts of things that ideologues like the midget dictator [Sadiq Khan] would like to impose upon us.I can now finally say the word ‘Bladerunners’ again. British taxpayers cheer vigilante group destroying climate cams

Fisker is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the electric vehicle (EV) company announced Tuesday.<h2>‘Like other companies in the electric vehicle industry’</h2>“Fisker has made incredible progress since our founding, bringing the Ocean SUV to market twice as fast as expected in the auto industry and making good on our promises to deliver the most sustainable vehicle in the world,” a spokesperson <a href="https://assets.ctfassets.net/cghen8gr8e1n/6W19OiEBJDVIFVEmo4feHA/df902c5cb2b067251a300efb0b35f611/Fisker-Filing-FINAL.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a>.The California-based company added it is not the only EV maker that has been struggling to stay in business.“We are proud of our achievements, and we have put thousands of Fisker Ocean SUVs in customers’ hands in both North American [sic] and Europe. But like other companies in the electric vehicle industry, we have faced various market and macroeconomic headwinds that have impacted our ability to operate efficiently. After evaluating all options for our business, we determined that proceeding with a sale of our assets under Chapter 11 is the most viable path forward for the company.”Fisker’s collapse is the latest indication that the EV industry is folding due to sinking demand. Other EV industry players are also cutting their losses as they jump ship.<h2>Hertz</h2>In March, Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr&nbsp;<a href="https://www.motorfinanceonline.com/news/hertz-ceo-resigns-amid-ev-investment-setback/#:~:text=Scherr's%20departure%20coincides%20with%20Hertz's,electric%20vehicle%20(EV)%20rentals">resigned</a> after his bet on EVs cost the car rental giant its biggest quarterly loss since 2020. Hertz had been praised by the Biden administration for its ambition to convert 25% of its fleet to EVs by the end of this year. In January, however, the company announced it would instead be selling its 20,000 EVs — including Teslas — at heavily discounted prices and replacing them with gas-powered cars.<h2>Mercedes-Benz</h2>Mercedes-Benz also recently had to give up its ambition to only sell electric cars by 2030. Instead, EVs are expected to make up only 50% of the German carmaker’s sales over the next decade.<h2>Apple</h2>In February, Apple abandoned its multi-billion dollar effort to create an electric car. Despite being a decade in the works and employing 2,000 people, Project Titan was axed due to falling consumer demand.<h2>Aston Martin</h2>A lack of consumer demand is also partly to blame for Aston Martin&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13138123/Aston-Martin-puts-brakes-new-electric-supercar-2026-bosses-say-drivers-want-engines-throaty-roar.html">placing</a> its battery-operated “supercar” on hold until 2026.“Demand, certainly at an Aston Martin price point, is not what we thought it was going to be two years ago,” said Aston Martin Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll.&nbsp;<h2>Ford</h2>In December, Ford slashed production of its flagship EV at its assembly plant in Dearborn, Michigan by half. For the last two years, British authorities have been testing AI-powered emotion recognition cameras on travelers in train stations, according to recently disclosed documents.<h2>What can the cameras see?</h2>In each of eight train stations around the UK, five to seven cameras or sensors scan the passing crowds. Using AI software from Amazon, the cameras use object recognition algorithms to spot criminal activity, trespassing, weapons, wet floors, overcrowding, and overstuffed trash cans.&nbsp;They can also alert authorities when passengers engage in “unusual behavior,” such as shouting, running, smoking, or skateboarding.&nbsp;A combination of existing cameras and newly installed smart cameras are being used for the surveillance project. All are equipped with Amazon’s Rekognition surveillance system.<h2>Emotional recognition</h2>Through a combination of facial and behavioral analyses, the Rekognition software allows officials to also <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/amazon-ai-cameras-emotions-uk-train-passengers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">analyze visitors’ emotions</a>. Internal documents note that the cameras can detect whether a passenger is “happy, sad [or] angry.” They can also recognize passenger satisfaction, which “could be utilized to maximum advertising and retail revenue.”<h2>Anti-social behavior</h2>Authorities can also detect passengers who exhibit “anti-social behaviour,” which&nbsp;<a href="https://www.met.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/asb/asb/antisocial-behaviour/what-is-antisocial-behaviour/">according</a> to London’s Metropolitan Police Service means “behaviour by a person which causes, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to persons not of the same household as the person.”<h2>Social distancing, face masks, and demographics</h2>Other&nbsp;<a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/24757655-usecases_dpas_review_managed_stations?responsive=1&amp;title=1">use cases</a> for the surveillance cameras include detecting whether passengers are keeping to social distancing rules and wearing face masks. The cameras can also scan for demographics by identifying people’s age profiles and “socio-economic classification,” which the documents note can create “revenue opportunities for better targeted advertising and product placement.”<h2>‘Quite a concerning step’</h2>The documents were obtained by Big Brother Watch, a civil rights and government watchdog group, in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request. Network Rail, a body within the Department of Transportation which manages most of the country’s train network, has been overseeing the surveillance project.&nbsp;“The rollout and normalization of AI surveillance in these public spaces, without much consultation and conversation, is quite a concerning step,” Jake Hurfurt, head of research and investigations at Big Brother Watch,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wired.com/story/amazon-ai-cameras-emotions-uk-train-passengers/">told</a> Wired.As of now, the surveillance systems do not use facial recognition technology, which analyzes faces and matches them against facial images stored in certain databases.
