Less than seven million people have died of/with COVID since the “pandemic” began, according to the authorities. That’s seven million over a period of almost three years. Meanwhile, in 2019 alone, almost fourteen million people died of infections of one kind or another, according to a recent study published in <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(22)02185-7/fulltext" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Lancet</a>. Almost eight million deaths were associated with 33 main bacterial pathogens – that’s one in eight of all deaths – making bacteria-related deaths the second leading cause of death globally in that year (the leading cause was ischaemic heart disease).According to another <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(21)02724-0/fulltext" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">study</a> in the same journal, from January of this year, 1.27 million people who died due to bacterial infection in 2019 could have been saved if the antibiotics available to treat their infection had not become redundant due to AMR, antimicrobial resistance. This study, described as “the most comprehensive estimate of AMR burden to date,” examined 23 pathogens, all those for which AMR is clinically relevant and for which sufficient data are available, across 204 countries, covering around 471 million records.Most scientists are in agreement that this number is only increasing from year to year, despite efforts to combat it. The problem is most acute in western sub-Saharan Africa and mildest in Australia and New Zealand. The pathogens most linked with AMR-related deaths are: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonos aeruginosa. What this means in practice is that diseases such as tuberculosis which were once seen as curable have reasserted themselves as killers, not only in the developing world but also in the United States and Europe.According to the study’s authors, AMR is now “a health problem whose magnitude is at least as large as major diseases such as HIV and malaria, and potentially much larger,” and it is “the 12th leading ... cause of death globally, ahead of both HIV and malaria.” They suggest a number of steps governments should be taking to address the problem more adequately, including infection control and prevention (hygiene and sanitation), investing in new antimicrobials, reducing overall exposure in non-medical settings (such as in the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/global/2022/nov/21/mcdonalds-and-walmart-beef-suppliers-put-public-health-at-risk-with-reckless-antibiotics-use" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">livestock</a> industry, where animals are commonly pumped full of antibiotics), and minimizing use in humans when unnecessary (for example, not prescribing antibiotics for viral complaints).In many parts of the world, physicians have long been taking AMR extremely seriously. In <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-03801-6?utm_source=Nature+Briefing&amp;utm_campaign=bcc3fadf2e-briefing-dy-20221123&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_c9dfd39373-bcc3fadf2e-47363820" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">San Francisco</a>, however, the Public Health Department has decided that in certain cases, using antibiotics prophylactically (to prevent disease rather than to treat it) is not only permissible but advisable. These certain cases are those relating to people who are considered to be at high risk of contracting STI (sexually transmitted infections) due to their lifestyle choices.Apparently, clinical trials have demonstrated that people who take a “preventive dose” of the antibiotic doxycycline after engaging in risky behavior are less likely to contract infections such as chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhoea. The number of cases of these diseases has been increasing steadily over the past decade.In the United Kingdom, the Health Security Agency and the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV do not endorse what is being called the “doxyPEP strategy” for prevention of syphilis or chlamydia, in part due to concern regarding the likelihood of enhancing the phenomenon of antimicrobial resistance. A microbiologist at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium, told the journal Nature that using doxycycline to prevent infections will “drastically increase” a person’s exposure to the antibiotic, pointing out that in the DoxyPEP trial, some participants took more than 20 doses of doxycycline each month, an amount that he called “astronomical”.Given that doxycycline is seen as a critically important drug for treating certain widespread conditions such as skin infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus and bacterial pneumonia, the creation of doxycycline-resistant versions of these pathogens is extremely worrying. Furthermore, the San Francisco target population tends to have multiple partners, meaning that any drug-resistant bacteria emerging from this population would likely spread fast and wide.The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calls antimicrobial resistance “a global threat” and dedicates an entire section of its website to describing the steps it is taking to combat it. As of the time of this writing, the CDC had yet to respond to a Frontline News inquiry on its stance regarding the San Francisco Health Department's new policy on prophylactic antibiotic use for those who wittingly expose themselves to risk.&nbsp;

A British vigilante group known as the “Blade Runners” is receiving widespread support from British taxpayers as it continues to destroy climate surveillance cameras across London.<h2>The ULEZ mandate</h2>By order of London Mayor Sadiq Khan, the city is peppered with ultra-low emission zones (ULEZs), areas accessible only to low-emission vehicles. Cars that do not meet the city’s environmental standards are charged £12.50 ($16) for entering the ULEZ. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras positioned around the zones read license plates and check them against the vehicles’ make and model in real time. If a vehicle does not meet the environmental threshold, a fine is levied against the car owner.&nbsp;The ULEZ climate mandate has drawn heavy&nbsp;<a href="https://frontline.news/post/london-hundreds-protest-against-climate-mandates">protests</a> from residents, including&nbsp;<a href="https://frontline.news/post/british-veteran-launches-hunger-strike-as-unrest-grows-over-climate-mandates">hunger strikes</a> and refusals to pay fines. Taxpayers have also taken to disabling the ANPR surveillance cameras which Transport for London (TfL), the city’s transportation department, said will be used both for climate and law enforcement.<h2>Taxpayers cheer the ‘Blade Runners’</h2>Since the climate restrictions were expanded last year, the Blade Runners have taken to disabling and destroying hundreds of cameras. Some surveillance vans have been spotted covered in graffiti with their tires slashed, while others have been completely covered in tarp.Last month, 21 cameras were destroyed in the hours after Sadiq Khan was re-elected mayor of London, the&nbsp;Daily Mail&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13538797/Moment-Blade-Runner-uses-power-tool-cut-ULEZ-camera-traffic-light-latest-attack-Sadiq-Khans-hated-scheme.html">reported</a>. Last weekend, Blade Runners used power tools to topple a ULEZ camera and traffic lights to the delight of some fellow taxpayers. In a video that was posted to social media, passing cars can be heard honking in support.The video received over 37,000 likes. Comments on the post were largely supportive, with users writing that, “When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty,” and “Fair play to them, it's a complete scam that does nothing.”Blade Runner Matt Hardy told the&nbsp;Daily Mail&nbsp;that the Blade Runners are “people pissed off about the tyranny reigning over us and getting out and doing things about it – real votes, real boys here.”<h2>‘These cameras are not about the climate. They are about control’</h2>British actor and influencer Laurence Fox said this week he was just given back his electronic devices by police after being arrested earlier this year for cheering on the Blade Runners:<blockquote>These cameras are not about the climate. They are about control. Fisker is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the electric vehicle (EV) company announced Tuesday.<h2>‘Like other companies in the electric vehicle industry’</h2>“Fisker has made incredible progress since our founding, bringing the Ocean SUV to market twice as fast as expected in the auto industry and making good on our promises to deliver the most sustainable vehicle in the world,” a spokesperson <a href="https://assets.ctfassets.net/cghen8gr8e1n/6W19OiEBJDVIFVEmo4feHA/df902c5cb2b067251a300efb0b35f611/Fisker-Filing-FINAL.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">said</a>.The California-based company added it is not the only EV maker that has been struggling to stay in business.“We are proud of our achievements, and we have put thousands of Fisker Ocean SUVs in customers’ hands in both North American [sic] and Europe. But like other companies in the electric vehicle industry, we have faced various market and macroeconomic headwinds that have impacted our ability to operate efficiently. After evaluating all options for our business, we determined that proceeding with a sale of our assets under Chapter 11 is the most viable path forward for the company.”Fisker’s collapse is the latest indication that the EV industry is folding due to sinking demand. Other EV industry players are also cutting their losses as they jump ship.<h2>Hertz</h2>In March, Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr&nbsp;<a href="https://www.motorfinanceonline.com/news/hertz-ceo-resigns-amid-ev-investment-setback/#:~:text=Scherr's%20departure%20coincides%20with%20Hertz's,electric%20vehicle%20(EV)%20rentals">resigned</a> after his bet on EVs cost the car rental giant its biggest quarterly loss since 2020. Hertz had been praised by the Biden administration for its ambition to convert 25% of its fleet to EVs by the end of this year. In January, however, the company announced it would instead be selling its 20,000 EVs — including Teslas — at heavily discounted prices and replacing them with gas-powered cars.<h2>Mercedes-Benz</h2>Mercedes-Benz also recently had to give up its ambition to only sell electric cars by 2030. Instead, EVs are expected to make up only 50% of the German carmaker’s sales over the next decade.<h2>Apple</h2>In February, Apple abandoned its multi-billion dollar effort to create an electric car. Despite being a decade in the works and employing 2,000 people, Project Titan was axed due to falling consumer demand.<h2>Aston Martin</h2>A lack of consumer demand is also partly to blame for Aston Martin&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13138123/Aston-Martin-puts-brakes-new-electric-supercar-2026-bosses-say-drivers-want-engines-throaty-roar.html">placing</a> its battery-operated “supercar” on hold until 2026.“Demand, certainly at an Aston Martin price point, is not what we thought it was going to be two years ago,” said Aston Martin Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll.&nbsp;<h2>Ford</h2>In December, Ford slashed production of its flagship EV at its assembly plant in Dearborn, Michigan by half. The automaker cut the monthly production quote for the all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup truck from 3,200 units to 1,600 units per month.<h2>Biden administration continues to force EV production</h2>Nevertheless, the Biden administration in March issued new climate mandates aimed at forcing more EV production. The new rules from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) contain tight emissions standards that will&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/epa-electric-vehicles-emissions-limits-climate-biden-e6d581324af51294048df24269b5d20a">require</a> 56% of new vehicle sales to be fully electric by 2032, with an additional 13% required to be hybrids.

For the last two years, British authorities have been testing AI-powered emotion recognition cameras on travelers in train stations, according to recently disclosed documents.<h2>What can the cameras see?</h2>In each of eight train stations around the UK, five to seven cameras or sensors scan the passing crowds. Using AI software from Amazon, the cameras use object recognition algorithms to spot criminal activity, trespassing, weapons, wet floors, overcrowding, and overstuffed trash cans.&nbsp;They can also alert authorities when passengers engage in “unusual behavior,” such as shouting, running, smoking, or skateboarding.&nbsp;A combination of existing cameras and newly installed smart cameras are being used for the surveillance project. All are equipped with Amazon’s Rekognition surveillance system.<h2>Emotional recognition</h2>Through a combination of facial and behavioral analyses, the Rekognition software allows officials to also <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/amazon-ai-cameras-emotions-uk-train-passengers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">analyze visitors’ emotions</a>. Internal documents note that the cameras can detect whether a passenger is “happy, sad [or] angry.” They can also recognize passenger satisfaction, which “could be utilized to maximum advertising and retail revenue.”<h2>Anti-social behavior</h2>Authorities can also detect passengers who exhibit “anti-social behaviour,” which&nbsp;<a href="https://www.met.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/asb/asb/antisocial-behaviour/what-is-antisocial-behaviour/">according</a> to London’s Metropolitan Police Service means “behaviour by a person which causes, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to persons not of the same household as the person.”<h2>Social distancing, face masks, and demographics</h2>Other&nbsp;<a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/24757655-usecases_dpas_review_managed_stations?responsive=1&amp;title=1">use cases</a> for the surveillance cameras include detecting whether passengers are keeping to social distancing rules and wearing face masks. The cameras can also scan for demographics by identifying people’s age profiles and “socio-economic classification,” which the documents note can create “revenue opportunities for better targeted advertising and product placement.”<h2>‘Quite a concerning step’</h2>The documents were obtained by Big Brother Watch, a civil rights and government watchdog group, in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request. Network Rail, a body within the Department of Transportation which manages most of the country’s train network, has been overseeing the surveillance project.&nbsp;“The rollout and normalization of AI surveillance in these public spaces, without much consultation and conversation, is quite a concerning step,” Jake Hurfurt, head of research and investigations at Big Brother Watch,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wired.com/story/amazon-ai-cameras-emotions-uk-train-passengers/">told</a> Wired.As of now, the surveillance systems do not use facial recognition technology, which analyzes faces and matches them against facial images stored in certain databases.
